An Evaluation of Phonetics in Selected Initial Reading Programs

Introduction: Phonics has played a dramatic role in American education since the time of its advent in the nation's schools. It has been in good and ill repute, in and out of the schools. There is probably no area of instruction in the elementary schools today about which there are so many conflicting theories and about which teachers have so much to learn as in the field of phonics. It is essential that teachers have a thorough understanding and realize the importance of phonetic skills, if the child is to acquire fluency and independence in reading.
