Understanding the Barriers to Perioperative Specialty Certification

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The microsystem analysis of the Post Anesthesia Care Unit at Kaiser Permanente, San Rafael reveals specialty certification for registered nurses is at 0%. This is a critical metric for the hospital as it embarks on its three year preparation phase for application of Magnet Recognition® status, in 2012. The proposed research study’s goal is to identify nurses Perceptions of the value of certification and to identify the perceived barriers preventing them from seeking specialty certification. The data from the study will drive the educational strategies to mitigate the barriers and promote certification metrics.
