Bay Area Russian-American Community: Search for It's Identity
Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>Recently, new groups, new voices are being heard in a loud demand for recognition. Black militants proclaim that "black is beautiful," Spanish speaking citizens are asserting their heritage; in fact, one group after another clamors for its identity and a share in the "American Dream." Only one large ethnic group is still "silent" and not well known outside of its insular community; I am speaking of my own compatriots the Russian group. The reasons for the self-imposed withdrawal are numerous and complex.</p> <p>Because of the ideological and religious differences with their mother country, the search for identity leads the Russian people not to the Soviet Union, but takes them to the achievements and heartaches of the past.</p> <p>Let us take the journey into the past through the portals of history and find out the identity of the Russian-Americans and “Why They Live Here.”</p>
