<p>The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the political endeavors of Cornelius Cole, Representative and Senator for California during the Civil War and the Reconstruction Period. Since Cole's political career was short-lived, a special effort was made to uncover the reasons why he lost the re-election both as Congressman and Senator.</p>
