The Deirdre Theme in AE, W. B. Yeats and J. M. Synge
Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>The renewal of Interest in the ancient legends of Ireland which marked the closing decades of the last century was a vital creative force in the Irish Literary Revival. Under the leadership of AE and 1. B. Yeats, young writers sought their inspiration in the glories of Ireland's heroic age rather than the sorrows of her more recent past. How the best-loved and most enduring of the legends, “Deirdre and the Sons of Usnach,” was woven by these two dramatists, and later by their younger colleague, J. M. Synge, into plays of outstanding worth without losing any of its distinctive loveliness, is the subject matter of this dissertation.</p>
