An Inquiry Into the Attitude of the German Center Party (Zentrum) and the Austrian Christian Socialist Party to Austro-German Anschluss

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of the present discussion is to show the position adopted by the German Center Party and the Austrian Christian Social-ists to the Austro-German Anschluss movement, from the signing of the armistice in October 1918, until the consummation of the reunion of Austria with its German mother country in March 1938. A brief sketch of the historical background introduces the topic, and a short account of the origin, development, and specific purposes of the two political parties under discussion is given in the first chapter. The discussion does not purport to be a complete or exhaustive treatment of the subject. Political conditions in Germany made it impossible to obtain much needed material, especially party literature; hence a more comprehensive presentation of the topic involved must be left to a later time, when material, indispensable for a thorough investigation of the points under consideration, wall be made accessible.
