This study is an introductory survey of \"narrative” prayers In Spanish literature. The term “narrative\" prayers is used to describe those prayers in which the achievements of God are enumerated before a petition for favors Is made. Although the principal interest is centered upon the \"narrative” prayer type, other forms of prayers will be enumerated and discussed as a basis for an ultimate comparison as to the frequency of the special type under consideration. The conditions inducing prayers of all types, the special aspects under which God is addressed. His attributes on which there seems to be general insistence, and the cult of the Blessed Virgin and the saints will be considered. General references to the Deity, to prayer, and to sacred objects will not be discussed.
The works studied belong to the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries and are extant In whole or in part in Spanish.
