Improving Reading Skills for English Language Learners Within the Regular Educational Program

<p>Helping students become proficient, competent readers is of vital interest to all educators, yet the growing numbers of students not meeting state and national reading goals are alarming. A large percentage of these students are English Language Learners (ELLs). To improve academic learning, classroom teachers need to be aware of current research findings in the area of reading and combine these with best practice strategies for ELLs. This study explores current research findings, recommended best practices and strategy instruction in the general area of reading and specifically in comprehension skills. Identification of specific needs for ELLs in this area will be addressed. The findings will be used to produce a practical handbook, which classroom teachers can use as a resource in the area of reading instruction for all students with emphasis on ELLs.</p>
