Effectively Using Technology to Assist ESL Students to Increase Their English Skills and Ability

<p>Using technology facilitates English teaching and learning in ESL (English as a second language) programs. This study demonstrates how students can improve their English skills in a Multi-Media Lab by using video and audio media. They also use technology to create and enrich their English learning environment outside of class. This study was based on the videotaped process of English learning in a Multi-Media Lab at an ELS Language Center (a worldwide language center for English learners) at Dominican University of California. In addition, seven ESL students from Japan and Taiwan who participated in this class were interviewed. Results show that technology provides the benefits to assist learning and stimulate students’ motivation to learn. However, because of some limitations, technology cannot substitute for a human teacher entirely. This study concludes with implications for further research and discusses the significance of technology use for ESL students and ESL programs.</p>
