Catholic Education Values and Their Impact on Student Recess Behavior: Is There a Connection

<p>Catholic education focuses on teaching values to students in school. These values are not seen at recess or during free play. Is there a connection between instruction in Catholic values and student behavior during recess? The purpose of this review of the research is to analyze approaches Catholic schools and teachers use to bring these values to the playground setting. The literature reveals not much research specific to Catholic school and recess behavior or a link between recess behavior and Catholic values. There is some research pertaining to public school recess. Research reveals that rough and tumble play is crucial to the development of social skills. This play should be encouraged instead of discouraged because of its aggressive appearance. Moreover/ observation of rough and tumble play can be used as an early intervention diagnostic tool for aggressive behavior in students. Schools and teachers have developed different processes to handle recess behavior during school.</p>
