Project Based Learning in a Standard-Based System

<p>This study focuses on how teachers adapt Project Based Learning to successfully teach the California State Science Standards in at the elementary school level.</p> <p>Six teachers with Project Based Learning background responded to a questionnaire of six questions that asked them to describe how they adapted this approach in their classrooms. Two administrators responded to a questionnaire by giving teachers recommendations on how to adapt Project Based Learning to make teaching aligned with the California State Science Standards.</p> <p>Several teachers presented California State Science Standards to their classes and had the students create projects. Other teachers guided these “student-centered” projects by adding requirements that fit to these Standards. Recommendations from administrators included limiting project options that emphasize State Science Standards, and teaching with a thematic approach, which integrates the learning of State Standards around a theme. Project Based Learning provides the process for thematic teaching. This study was intended to begin the process of inquiry.</p>
