Abstract
dc:description.abstract
Reading is a critical lifetime skill. It is also a topic that generates much controversy. Addressing California and the rest of the nation’s reading crisis has again called for an adjustment as well as an evaluation of current instructional practices and reading curriculum. Critics have argued that phonetic instruction is necessaiy to solve the reading crisis. Schools cannot accomplish the goal alone; parents must take a more proactive role in the education of their children. This study investigated the effects of phonemic awareness and home reading environments on standardized reading comprehension test scores. This study suggests that correlations exist between children’s levels of phonemic awareness and their home reading environments; however, no significant correlation existed between these aspects and reading comprehension test scores.
