Grant Proposal for an Art Therapy Program at the Comprehensive Pediatric Care Unit of Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The Comprehensive Pediatric Care Unit and the Comprehensive Partial Hospitalization Program of Lucile S. Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford together seek $31,000 from the Roy Disney Family Foundation for the establishment of an Art Therapy program. This money will provide funding for the art therapy program from June, 1996 through May, 1997.

Lucile S. Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford is a non-profit, state licensed medical facility which provides comprehensive care to children and adolescents throughout the San Francisco Bay and Northern California areas. The art therapy program will provide individual and group art therapy to more than 90 patients annually. The children and adolescents treated on the Comprehensive Pediatric Care Unit and in the Comprehensive Partial Hospitalization Program are in need of additional, alternative ways to support the management of their illnesses. They enter this medical/psychiatric hospital setting with difficulties that are extremely frightening to them. The children and adolescents are at a further disadvantage because of their inability to get in touch with and communicate their feelings and emotions. Art therapy meets these needs and offers even

more.

Much has been written of the value and effectiveness of this non-verbal therapy in and outside of the hospital. Art therapy allows the children to learn how to express, communicate, socialize, build self-esteem, gain insight into their problems and recover in a safe, contained environment The use of art therapy with its assessment, diagnostic and unique feature of using art media to express and communicate can serve as a valuable component to the multi-disciplinary team at Packard Hospital.
