En el seno de la metodología observacional se ha diseñado un sistema de observación que permita -al portero y los técnicos encargados de su preparación- extraer información relevante para predecir la dirección del lanzamiento. La estructura del instrumento de observación se vertebra a partir de cuatro momentos clave; además, se registran otros fotogramas que no se consideran claves pero que capturan la interacción entre lanzador y portero. Se han presentado evidencias de fiabilidad, validez y generalizabilidad de los datos obtenidos mediante la herramienta observacional. La muestra de la tesis doctoral comprende los penaltis efectuados en competiciones internacionales de selecciones -Eurocopa, Copa América, Copa África, Copa Asia y Copa Oro-, celebradas en el periodo comprendido entre 2019 y 2021. Se han realizado análisis tanto agrupando los penaltis de todas las competiciones como de manera individual para cada una de ellas. También se ha analizado, por su relevancia en competiciones internacionales de selecciones, la interacción entre lanzadores y porteros en penaltis correspondientes a las tandas de desempate.
