Transitivising formations in competition? Lability and the effects of preverbs on old english causative oppositions

Abstract

dc:description

RESUMEN EN INGLÉS The present study investigates the transitivising effect of two word-formation mechanisms in Old English: the deverbal –jan formation and verbal prefixes. The data analysed in this work are taken from Old English morphological causative pairs, together with their prefixed forms, that have undergone a process of labilization whereby one or both members of the causative pair have taken over the valence value of their counterpart. Thus, verbs such as meltan ‘melt (intr.)’ and myltan ‘melt (trans.)’, originally displaying an intransitive and transitive valence only, can be used as transitive or intransitive with no morphological marking. As a first objective, the vanishing transitivising power of the causative formation will be examined. To this end, the process of labilization undergone by the verbs under analysis will be investigated in order to shed light on some of the possible engines of this process such as prefixes or phonological similarities between causative and non-causative verbs. Additionally, this study brings to the forefront the issue of variation within the Old English period by exploring the differences in valence behaviour in different text types composed at different periods and concluding that divergencies in these respect are indeed relevant. Furthermore, this work investigates the influence on these verbs of another transitivising mechanism, i.e. verbal prefixes, and how they interact with morphological causativity. Results show that prefixes have a noteworthy effect on transitivity in the cardinal sense (c.f. Hopper and Thompson (1980)) as well as on several specific parameters such as Telicity or Affectedness. As for the interaction of prefixes and morphological causatives, it is shown that prefixes have not quite overridden the morphological –jan suffix as a transitivising mechanism during the Old English period, although they are a transitivising force at least as relevant as the former. This thesis intends to shed new light on the study of these word-formation mechanisms by analysing the data under a new scope. First, the present work is based on a corpus of examples taken from all major Old English texts rather than on already processed dictionary data or data presented by previous authors. Additionally, they have been subjected to statistical analysis in order to try to avoid any impressionistic conclusions and to offer a new perspective on the data leading to some unexpected results.
