Actividad y estructuras pecuarias en la Comunidad de Albarracín (1284-1516)

Doctoral thesis by Juan Manuel Berges Sánchez , under the direction of Dra. Isabel Falcón. This doctoral thesis analyses the problem of pasturage in the territory of this historical institution during the late Middle Ages. Furthermore, it gives a design about the articulation of the space in this mountain area, situated just at the point of union between Aragonese, Castilian and Valencian lands. His proposal involves the claiming of the inside territories' importance. The study analyses the livestock industry through the autonomous rules, the agreements reached between the town and their villages and the pastoral institutions - specially the evolution of the Mesta of Albarracín. It also includes the analyses of different ways of livestock production - intensive, semi-intensive and trashumant - and the agricultural and livestock methods implanted - specially the heredades and masías. The thesis deals with the Albarracin's social structure and its internal relations according to the defence of livestock interests. With regard to the pasture, the study analyses the evolution from a primitive collective exploitation to a privatisation of those areas. It also pays attention to shepherds, those who play the leading role in pasture. Although livestock production is not one of the main subjects of this thesis, the star sheep product cannot be excluded from it: the wool. It is widely known that the Albarracín's mountain range has always been related to transhumance. Its livestock volume and routes, the way of transferring flocks and the increasing number of various disputes are subject of analysis. Finally, the thesis deals with the fact that livestock were an important source of income, particulary by the tax on livestock movement.
