Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This thesis compares three Francophone novels belonging to the genres of autofiction and childhood memoir: Petit pays (2016) by Gaël Faye, Un papillon dans la cité (1992) by Gisèle Pineau and France, récit d’une enfance (2006) by Zahia Rahmani. This analysis brings together literature from Francophone regions that not often examined together: Burundi, Guadeloupe and Algeria respectively. These stories merit comparison thanks to their similarities and differences. The three main characters are children, and as a result the reader encounters the narrators at the moment where they are finding their place in the adult world. This allows for examination of the intersections of childhood, identity formation, the sense of belonging, memory, trauma and displacement. Over of the course of each text, the reader sees the narrator’s migration to France, but for different reasons and within different contexts. The central question for the narrators, and for the authors, is “Who am I, after all that I have lived through?”. It is a question that comes from learning about oneself, but also the people, contexts and circumstances that contribute to identity formation. The three novels analyzed here focus on the displaced child, but what also links them together is the choice of the authors to emphasize on the role of mothers and maternal figures. They pass onto their children their family’s past and the present circumstances, and consequentially influence the sense of belonging and identity of the narrators. This thesis uses motherhood to examine trauma, memory and identity. These themes are present throughout Francophone literature, therefore this analysis can not only contribute to the existing literature on Faye, Pineau and Rahmani, but also on a larger scale. There is the appealing possibility to add to the critical discourse on Gaël Faye and Zahia Rahmani, which is in the process of developing. This also represents a contribution to the study of the childhood memoir focusing on the displaced child during their childhood.

Abstrait
