Viceroy

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Viceroy is a novel in four parts. The first section shows Francis watching a TV interview with Ida Bergson, a fashion designer from Salt Lake City. The second section follows Esther, who has fled her life in Los Angeles and is attempting to reinvent herself while working at a motel in Bombay Beach, where she meets Tom, Mukpo and a group of artists living in the desert. The third section takes place in LA and focuses on Ida Bergson, Tom, and two models, Nia and Hilda. The final section returns to Francis, five years after the opening section, and spans a decade as her home is transformed from a private residence into a public art site called the Charles Langley Art House. Viceroy is about the intangible heritage of identity and the intersection of art and the state as an insidious site of cultural preservation, reduction and stagnation; it is about inheritance as intergenerational contamination, and the way we descend from histories without permission to inherit them; it is about trying to make a home in the world without the ability to own anything.
