The critical preface to Dispatch is broadly organized into two sections. The first section defines and analyzes the “social lyric” as a sub-genre of documentary poetry, paying attention especially to the ethics of witnessing. The second section explores the relationship between local/global and silence/sound via readings of the life, letters, and poetry of Lorine Niedecker. The focus of these two sections is intended to contextualize the framework/preoccupations of Dispatch.
