Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>This work is a coming-of-age novel that is inspired by my mother’s childhood in 1960’s Hong Kong. It explores a young girl’s attempts to establish an autonomous identity in the face of enormous challenges, including physical violence, sexual abuse, and hunger. The novel also explores the emergence of a unique Hong Kong Chinese identity that many in the region are fighting to defend today.</p>
