The Diverse Portrayals of the American Family in Major Situation Comedies from the 1950s to the 2000s

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

I have chosen to explore the transformation of the American family portrayed in situation comedies in the twentieth century. The popular representations of the family from the 1950s to the recent years on television have given me the idea to search for more details in connection with the roots of the genre and historical background. I have found it interesting first to find similarities between real and media-represented life images then to notice how each and every sitcom affected the other. The process of transformation of values and family relationships were that excited me the most in the popular representations. (Introduction)
