NOVEL ZINC AND LITHIUM NON-AQUEOUS BATTERIES FOR LOW RATE APPLICATIONS

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The investigations of battery systems based on polymer electrolytes of the type PEOgiZnClz and in particular cells of the type ZnXPEOgiZnCbXMnOi are reported in this thesis. Results are reported for OCV measurements and discharge curves for loaded cells under varying degrees of relative humidity. Using methods based on polarography the speciation between the oxidation states of manganese as a function of the degree of cell discharge has been studied. The discharge times for a series of cells suggests an exponential decrease with increasing load. This is consistent with low electrolyte conductivity and less than ideal cathode conductivity, which leads to an increased "front face’ reaction with increasing load. A value for the diffusion coefficient for Zn2+ in such systems has been calculated. Preliminary investigations on cells incorporating the 1,2,1,2 phase superconductor (Tai4Cu>/OSr2GdCu20g.s are reported. Diffusion coefficients for Li^ and Ca2+ in cells of the type LiVLiAsFe in PC\(Tai/jCui/,)Sr2GdCu20g-5 and Ca\Ca(BF4)2 in PC\(Tai/,Cu>/,)Sr2GdCu20g^ are reported. Cyclic voltammetric studies of both systems are also reported. Finally, this thesis explains the techniques used when interfacing a proprietary battery test unit, including an explanation of the program devised. An outline on the theory of semiconductor devices and in particular the npn bipolar transistor, integrated circuits, digital systems and computer I/O facilities is also included.
