Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this study is to study the technological innovation of digital money in the context of earlier monetary innovations. This involves considering the monetary history of selected civilisations over the last 5,000 years and to see if time and space make their unique lessons irrelevant to the twenty-first century. Money is often viewed from a theoretical viewpoint in economics, politics or sociology. However, only a business history approach can facilitate the comparison and analysis of money in the very long term, across geo-political and social boundaries. Across four major civilisations, primitive and modem monies the conclusion emerges that technology alone cannot establish a new form of money. The development of digital money will rely on the norms of the exchange environment, whether legislative or social. It will also rely on the intentions of the society itself and the heavy influence of governments, and this thesis indicates the ways in which governments may secure the survival of digital money, if they wish it
