Three Dimensional Television : An Investigation Concerning Programmable Parallax Barriers

dc:description.abstractStereoscopic or three dimensional display of images is a logical step in the evolution of electronic display systems. We see the world stereoscopically so it is only natural that representations of this experience should provide an equally rich visual sensation. There have been countless attempts to produce an effective three dimensional display system, previously in the photographic arts, and more recently in the area of electronic imaging. A fundamental and common aim of all such systems is the presentation of distinct views to each of the observer's eyes, yet the methods adopted to achieve this aim have varied enormously. A fascinating diversity exists in 3D display implementations. Advances in the enabling technologies, particularly electro-optics, suggest that new opportunities for the implementation of such systems should be available as a consequence. One such example is the parallax barrier display method. This is one of the oldest known autostereoscopic (without glasses) methods. Many enhancements to the basic method have been proposed which require modulation of the barrier system. Traditionally the mechanical nature of these systems has presented a fundamental obstacle in their implementation, and ultimately, acceptance. Following the hypothesis that advances in electro-optic materials might yield a display system which has been hitherto unrealisable, the aim of this research has been to investigate the viability of a 3D display system which uses an electro-optic parallax barrier. The fundamental objective being to implement such a system. File research was sponsored by British Telecom Research Laboratories and necessarily reflects their interest. The general context of the work concerns 'television' but a particular application of videoconferencing was envisaged.
