THE INFLUENCE OF YARN PROPERTIES ON THE SIZE SENSITIVITY OF PANTYHOSE

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

In this thesis the various aspects, of hosiery yarns are discussed. The yarns are divided into three groups:- - High Elastic Yarns - Torque Yams - Bicomponent Yarns For each yarn specific problem areas are indicated and methods to investigate these problems described. The pantyhose produced and its production from the above yarns is described as well as the parameters generally used to specify the pantyhose dimensions. Each of the above yarn typos has a certain size sensitivity This term has often been used by manufacturers in the past but until now methods to assess this size sensitivity have not been available. In the literature the various approaches to hosiery sizing specifically and to sizing problems in general are discussed The most progress has been made with the NAHM system. In this thesis, the NAHM system has been modified to indicate areas of identical log volume (from 6 to 12 litres) and a test was designed wherein pantyhose with increasing leg volumes were tested on the same pair of legs throughout the test (one female test person). By using a range of pantyhose leg volumes larger than the actual log volume, the limit can be assessed where a particular pantyhose log volume begins to behave unsatisfactorily. The tests conducted indicate that various yarns have different volume ranges which cover a given leg satisfactorily. The Volume ranges can be converted into a size sensitivity figure. This size sensitivity figure correlates reasonably well with the Crimp Rigidity of the various yarns. The new technique is considered a flexible one which can be used to test, without large wearer-panels, the size sensitivity of a particular yarn.
