A number of Component Execution Environments such as .J2EE, .NET and the CORBA Component Model are well established and industry surveys report increasing engagement in CBD. However, the software crisis that CBD was envisaged to resolve is still with us. Components appear to have increased software development productivity but not necessarily quality in terms of fitness for purpose. This thesis asserts that the impressive research to date on components has been almost wholly focused on technical concerns without the issues of ensuring that components are usefully deployed being addressed. It presents a preliminary research model, called the K-Mediator Framework, which rests on the notion of three generic stakeholders (Business User, Application Developer, and Component Developer) their different viewpoints and, importantly, their different areas of expertise. It proposes that ‘three plus one’ types of knowledge are required to give rational support to the build versus buy versus reuse decisions of component provisioning. These types of knowledge are encapsulated in the decision-making framework for stakeholder negotiation. Finally, the thesis describes a K-Mediator tool and its use in a case-based experiment using an established CBD framework to validate the preliminary model and lay the groundwork for future research in this critical area.","abstract_html":"In terms of technology Component Based Development (CBD) is a reality.
