Software Tools for Integral Imaging Virtual Studios

To reduce the cost and provide extensive creativity, 3D virtual studios that can carry out a set of tasks from image capturing, processing, virtual scene generation, image compositing, compression, editing etc are necessary for 3D television program production. While 2D virtual studios have been successfully used for 2D television programs, 3D virtual studio systems are still in the initial research stage. Generally, an integral imaging 3D virtual studio system includes the hardware part and software part. The hardware may include the camera system, lighting system, blue screen, positioning system, computing facility, infrastructure, etc. The software may include the software environment and software tools. The objective of this research is to investigate the methods that are related to the three major functions of the software tools, which include computer generation of virtual scenes, object depth estimation of the real scenes, and compositing of the real and virtual scenes. On computer generation of integral images, a set of computational models is systematically investigated and particularly three types of imaging schemes are derived. The direct pixel mapping functions for several typical uni-directional and omni-directional micro-image configurations are given. Based on the analysis of the viewing properties particularly the newly defined properties of integral images, the Maximum Viewing Width configuration is proposed to achieve the maximum viewing range under certain conditions. A depth estimation method, which is based on the processing of the reconstructed integral image in space, is proposed. The processes and the structural models of the depth estimation method are described in detail. Finally, after reviewing the compositing methods used in normal 2D virtual studios, the processes and methods of compositing in 3D integral imaging virtual studios are suggested.
