MODELLING AND SIMULATION OF A CYCLOCONVERTER INDUCTION MOTOR DRIVE

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The objective was to develop a complete software tool using MA TLAB/SIMULINK for a cycloconverter induction motor drive. The tool can be used for both educational or research purposes. The use of MA TLAB/SIMULINK for this purpose has not been reported before and therefore presents new ideas in the modelling and simulation of a complete cycloconverter induction motor drive system. The main contributions of this thesis to the advance of research in this field can be summarised as the: ♦ modelling and simulation of the induction machine in term of d-q axis theory. ♦ modelling and simulation of induction machine with main flux saturation taken into account. ♦ modelling and simulation of a three/ three phase cycloconverter ♦ writing a program which will analyse the output of cycloconverter in terms of harmonics components. ♦ generation and analysis of results pertaining to the complete cycloconverter fed induction motor drive system. The adopted control strategy, from which the thyristor gate signals used to trigger the thyristors are derived, is based on the traditional cosine timing control technique. This is incorporated in the Simulink model. The resultant behaviour of the machine is obtained by superunposing the effect of the fundamental and harmonics for both the unsaturated and saturated machine. The software product is an especially useful tool in the study of cycloconverter induction motor drive system performance, particularly with respect to the transient starting characteristics. The computer results illustrate that the principles and characterisation of three pulse cycloconverter induction motor drive system can be accomplished using the approach described.
