Sepulcros abiertos: Cadáveres en las narraciones de la Guerra de la Independencia de Venezuela

<p>My thesis analyzes the representation of corpses in Venezuelan narratives written in country’s first hundred years as independent republic (1810-1910). My goal is to show how these narratives has been subjected to procedures that foster their continuous “dismemberment”, “custodial” and “disinterment” with the aim of the preserving the process of National Independence as a persistent referent in the political and cultural discourse. For this purpose, I examine three texts: <em>Recuerdos sobre la Rebelión de Caracas</em> (1829) by José Domingo Díaz; <em>Biografía de José Félix Ribas</em> (1865) by Juan Vicente González; and <em>Venezuela heroica </em>(1881) by Eduardo Blanco. Through a close examination of these texts, I explore the role played by corpses and by the nationalization and institutionalization of death in the origin of the Venezuelan state and identity.</p> <p>Mi tesis analiza las representaciones de cadáveres en relatos de guerra escritos en el marco del primer centenario de la república de Venezuela (1810-1910). Mi propósito es mostrar como esas narrativas, en tanto que sometidas a procedimientos análogos empleados a los cadáveres: “desmembrar”, “velar” y “exhumar”, han servido para preservar el proceso de la independencia nacional como un referente persistente en el discurso político y cultural. Para lograr esto examino tres textos: <em>Recuerdos sobre la Rebelión de Caracas</em> (1829) de José Domingo Díaz; <em>Biografía de José Félix Ribas</em> (1865) de Juan Vicente González; y <em>Venezuela heroica </em>(1881) de Eduardo Blanco. A partir de un examen detallado de estos textos, exploro el papel jugado por los cadáveres y la nacionalización e institucionalización de la muerte en el origen de la identidad y el Estado venezolano.</p>
