The Slaveholders, the Mexican Liberals, and the Texan Revolution

The revolt of Texas from Mexico and its subsequent annexation to the United States produced a conflict of opinion. Anti-slaveryites of all degrees united against acceptance of the new republic either in the family of nations or within the United States, The annexation of Texas was one of the important issues in the party struggle, and the intra-Democratic factional strife, of 1844. |John Quincy Adams and Thomas Hart Benton were notable leaders of the opposition to pro-Texan activities. Adams became the recognized leader in Congress for those who opposed annexation on an anti-slavery basis, Benton led the intra-Democratic opposition during 1844 and opposed in the Senate the method and terms of annexation as it was accomplished,
