Fiction for the Intermediate Grades

From the title of this thesis the reader will learn that the contents exclude the discussion of every other form of literature available for children in the intermediate grades. Poetry, Fairy Tales, Drama, Biography, and Factual Material are not brought within the pale of this thesis, neither does juvenile fiction—good, bad, and indifferent read by students of the upper grades and high school, nor the tales intended for the primary pupils enter into the discussion. It treats simply of fiction for the intermediate grades. |These facts were obtained from books and magazine articles written by men of authority on the subject; from data gathered through questionnaires sent to children’s librarians, teachers, publishers of children’s books, and from personal letters from a few of each of these groups. |There has been a general opinion that few good books of fiction had been written for children; that authors devoted their time to the writing of adult fiction to the exclusion of juveniles; that there was a deplorable lack of good fiction for children in the intermediate grades, at least for the fourth grade.
