The importance of basicity in determining the strength of acids in solution has long been discussed by such investigator s as Latimer, Rode bush, Conant, Hall, and others. Rodebush and Ewart indicate that the dielectric constant of a solvent must also be considered, although to a lesser degree than basicity, in predicting the behavior of an acid in a solvent. In a solvent which possesses basic properties and at the same time has a high dielectric constant an acid will be highly ionized.
