The object of this paper is to explain how glycerin and borax react with water to produce an acid, and that the acid produced is not boric acid.|That borax and glycerin react with water to produce an acid clearly manifests itself in the presence of a bicarbonate by an effervescence that is most noticeable. The National Formulary makes use of this knowledge in giving its directions for the manufacture of Alkaline Antiseptic solution and again in manufacturing Sompound Solution of Sodium Borate, the directions are to mix the bicarbonate with a little water followed by the addition of glycerin and waiting for the effervescence to cease.
