Abstract
dc:description.abstractIt is the aim of this prefatory chapter to define symbolism in some manner, to give the reader some notion of the different stages in meaning through which the word has passed and to show the different attitudes toward the word disclosed by the various epochs of civilization. Reference has been made also, to the apparently essential element of its constitution proven by the fact of its being discarded in one epoch and its being adopted in another.
