A Study Of The Gastropoda Of Fontenelle Forest

The terrestrial pulmonates of Fontenelle Forest, Omaha, Nebraska, have been made the object of the following study. A checklist of the terrestrial snails of Nebraska is not available and a search of the literature revealed little information on the gastropods of Nebraska. Walker (1906) listed a number of species collected from Omaha and from Cherry County. The species listed from the Omaha area included Polygyra profunda (Say), Polygyra multilineata (Say). Both were found again in the collection from Fontenelle Forest. McMillan (1944) identified a collection of land snails from the western section of Nebraska; however, none of the species he listed were collected during the present study. This study is restricted to the larger species of pulmonates. Collections of terrestrial Mollusca were made during the period of June to September, 1963. The collecting areas are indicated on the map (Fig.1.) The pulmonates were classified and studies were conducted on their numbers and distribution. The three most abundant species found in the various collecting areas were Triodopsis multilineata (Say), Triodopsis albolabris (Say) and Anguispira alternata (Say). Laboratory populations of these three species were subjected to studies concerning diet, pH tolerance, and heat tolerance.
