Comparison of Some of the Various Methods of Determination of Iron

It is the purpose of this study to examine a number of various determinations of iron. These determinations may be divided into three general classifications. These are the volumetric, gravimetric, and colorimetric. The volumetric analyses to be considered are the: (l) Zimmermann-Reinhardt, (2) dichromate with internal redox indicator, (3) dichromate with internal redox indicator demonstrating the reversability of the reaction by back-titrating with standard ferrous solution, (4) ceric sulfate, (5) reduction with zinc in a Jones reductor followed by titration with standard permanganate or standard dichromate, (6) iodometric, (7) gravimetric method to be considered is the method utilizing ammonium hydroxide as the hydrated ferric oxide precipitant, (8) colorimetric method of E. B. Sandell, using hydroxylamine hydrochloride as the reducer and ferroin as the colorimetric indicator. | These methods of analysis are to be compared with reference to educational value, quantitative reliability, and cost. The educational value is to be considered in light of chemical knowledge that classroom study will bring to the students. The quantitative reliability is to be considered with respect to the accuracy of the methods. The cost per equivalent weight is to be considered with respect to the main oxidizing or reducing agent, if a costly reagent, and to the titrating reagent.
