A Comparison of the Neural and Hormonal Aspects of the Sympathico-Adrenal Medullary System

The syatolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rates of normal dogs fell significantly when subjected to prolonged fasting. When these animals were realimented with luxus consumption carbohydrate immediately following the fast, these indices rose significantly above control levels. The elevated levels were maintained for as long as 108 days. isocaloric substitution of protein (horsemeat, beef or casein) resulted in a return of these indices to control values. | In contrast, bilaterally sympathectomized dogs differed from normal dogs in two ways: (a) the systolic pressure remained at control levels or slightly elevated with little or no change in diastolic pressure during pro longed fasting (the pulse rate decreased as in normal dogs), and (b) on realimentation with luxus consumption carbohydrate following a prolonged fast, there was no significant change in the systolic or diastolic pressure (the pulse rate was elevated as in normal dogs). | In attempting to delineate the source of the radical differences between the sympathectomized and normal dogs when subjected to extreme dietary stresses, we have performed a unilateral adrenalectomy and denervation of the contralateral adrenal gland; throughout this work these dogs will he referred to as being adrenal denervated. After recovery these dogs were subjected to the same dietary stresses as the aforementioned animals.
