The Formal Redox Potential of the Permanganatemanganous System in Sulfuric Acid
Abstract
dc:description.abstractEquilibrium constants of redox reactions, tho degree of completeness of respective reactions, activity coefficients of solutes, choice of reducing or oxidising agents to be used—those and many other problems in analytical chemistry can be calculated or predicted satisfactorily through a knowledge of the formal potential of many conjugate redox pairs. One of the most important conjugate pairs is the permanganate-manganous system in acid solution. |A search through the literature seemed to show that no attempts have been made to measure the formal redox potential of the permanganate-mangonous system in sulfuric acid. All investigations undertaken were to secure more accurate standard potentials for the manganous-manganese dioxide system and the manganese dioxide-permanganate system in order to calculate the thermodynamic oxidation potential of the manganous-permanganate couple.
