dc:description.abstract"To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour. " |These few, often quoted lines are easily and popularly recognized as having been written by William Blake. Certainly his own age did not know them as being Blake’s work for he was quite neglected and ignored by the readers of his day. When he was recognized or discovered by the critics, Blake received a mass of critical attention that was especially intense and prolific during and after the 1920’s. Yet it was no more than he deserved after so much neglect. So, too, the depth of meaning of his work and the difficulty of finding clear expression of what he meant have naturally led to controversial and different approaches by his critics. Indeed, Blake was many things to many critics, and quite opposite theories about him can be found.
