The insular reception of the Eusebian canon tables: exegesis and iconography

This thesis examines the Insular reception of the Eusebian canon tables before 800 AD. The tables, devised in Caesarea in the early fourth century, represent one of the most successful patristic attempts to demonstrate the harmony of the quadriform Gospel. Their success is reflected in the series' rapid and widespread transmission. As well as the Insular examples discussed in this work, the canons appear as a preface in medieval Greek, Armenian, Georgian, Syrian, Coptic, Ethiopian and Gothic Gospel books.
