The Development of Appropriate and Helpful Teaching Methods as Applied to Distance Learning

<p>Advanced technology has provided numerous opportunities for broadening education and it's purposes. One type of technology particularly influential involves communications equipment whereby students at different physical locations may be brought together interactively, by both audio and video, to achieve the learning process. This type of technology has come to be known as distance learning. Although many uses of the term, "distance learning", refer to class room delivery that is not interactive, the purpose here is to discuss an environment where teacher and students at remote locations can truly collaborate as if the physical separation does not exist. Other terms, such as distance education, videoconferencing, and satellite learning are used for the same meaning (Emery & Schubert, 1993). As with any tool to be used in the educational setting, those educators using distance learning should be equipped with the skills and methods in delivery and planning that will help ensure a more successful approach to this new technology. Effective teaching methods using distance learning equipment are essential to the understanding of any instructor who attempts to apply instruction with this resource.</p> <p>All effective teachers possess certain skills, traits, and attitudes that make them quality teachers.· Sensitivity to the various physical, emotional, and academic needs ·of students, and knowing how to meet those needs, for example, is a trait that comes from experience and concerted individual effort. Good teaching skills are necessary for education at all levels and should not be deluted by any type of new technology. It is crucial that an instructor who considers using distance learning technology not discount those desirable teaching skills that he or she has already developed.</p>
