This study is an analysis of twenty young adult novels which contain the theme of death. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the characters experienced the five stages of the grieving process. Twenty novels were selected because they contained death as a central theme. The characters in these books were rated according to the extent to which each experienced through feelings or behavioral responses the stages in the process of dealing with death as outlined by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross in her book On Death and Dying. It was determined whether the characters did experience each stage in Kubler Ross's process. The findings from the ratings show that a majority of the primary characters experienced the denial, anger, depression, and acceptance stages to a great extent. A majority of the primary characters did not experience the bargaining stage at all. A one page review - analysis of each title includes the author, publisher, year of publication, and identification of primary, and secondary characters by relationship, name, sex, and age. Each character is rated from zero to three indicating to what degree the character showed that he or she reflected each stage. There will also be a synopsis of each novel.
