This dissertation seeks to understand the role of epideictic rhetoric in American liberal democracy. Using Aristotle’s theory of the epideictic, I examine epideictic speeches given during times of crisis and in times of relative peace fortifying American ends. I demonstrate the significant political contributions of epideictic speeches and poetry. I end with a poetic demonstration of the limits of rhetoric.
