Ethnographic Narrative Project: My Teaching and Educational Journey

<p>This ethnography follows my journey teaching first grade in South Los Angeles. The purpose of this ethnography is to understand the levels of community, school, and classroom to inform my teaching practices and supporting my students and families. This journey concludes far different from how it starts as our school quickly transitioned from in-person instruction to online instruction due to COVID-19. I conducted case studies on three specific students, collected data from home visits, student interviews, observations, and assessments which supported me in creating an action plan to best support my students’ academic and social-emotional needs. I studied my students’ different environments including community, school, and classroom. Through researching community demographics, analyzing supports the community has and does not has, critically analyzing school’s mission and practices, and reflecting on my classroom culture, I was able to see how environment plays a part in a student’s educational experience and academic achievement. Reflecting on my own practices as a social justice educator, I was able to see my professional and personal growth.</p>
