Through the Female Perspective: An Analysis of Male Characters in Jane Austen’s <em>Northanger Abbey</em>

<p>Literary scholars have long examined Austen’s <em>Northanger Abbey</em> with a central focus on the female characters, the narrator, the lack of education of upper-middle class women, and overall satire of gothic tropes. This essays turns away from the predominantly feminine focus by delving into an analysis of the male characters, who are often overlooked and generalized in Austenian discourse. This essay further expands on gothic and feminist analyses by providing an in-depth exploration of the male characters relative to their importance to the main protagonist’s coming of age as well as Austen’s depiction of masculinity and male privilege.</p>
