Removal of organic pollutants present in water using inorganic-organic Hybrid Multifunctional Nanocomposites

Novel multifunctional nanocomposites were synthesised for the removal of organic dye pollutants from contaminated water samples. Nanocomposites were functionalised to remove dyes via adsorption, photocatalytic breakdown and separation of the nanocomposites from water by simple magnetism. Two types of nanocomposites were produced, carbon based photocatalytic magnetic nanocomposites (synthesised by embedding superparamagnetic iron oxide and titanium dioxide into a carbon source i.e. Multi walled carbon nanotubes and activated charcoal) The second type are Novel hybrid Magnetic Ionic-liquid-nanocomposites were synthesised with silica coated magnetic nanoparticles and ionic-liquid. The ionic liquid functionalisation potentially provides multiple interactions that can adhere organic dyes to its surface due to the imidazole group.
