Investigation into the positive outcomes of re-training long term unemployed people

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

However, this research has also attempted to find out if positive outcomes, as perceived by the students themselves, have been achieved. The hypothesis adopted has been: "People who have been unemployed for more than six months are likely to gain positive outcomes after undertaking short re-training programmes". The objectives were To establish if the students surveyed had a) gained employment, become self-employment, undertaken voluntary/casual work or taken up further education b) actively sought and achieved what they considered to be positive outcomes. c) found their lives or the lives of their immediate family affected by their unemployment or the outcomes after undertaking training. This has allowed research with students who had received one to one counselling, undertaken the job search and motivational training and also undertaken specific courses e.g. Basic Food Hygiene, Health & Safety at Work, Word Processing, Working in a Caring Environment, Basic First Aid at Work, Marketing & Advertising and Communications. It has provided information required by the finders of this research. The broadening of the research has also provided a more in-depth view of the perceptions of students who had sought training help. It has broadened the research into areas of human concerns and has taken a look at a slice of the life history of a percentage of the subjects of this research.
