Mentoring in the high school: An approach to improving pupil effort

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The 1988 Educational Reform Act (ERA) attempts to raise standards, extend choice and produce a better education system that is more accountable and cost effective. Therefore the focus of this dissertation is to look at mentoring processes as a tool to enhance pupil effort and ultimately raise standards in a secondary school by examining, using, modifying and attempting to implement proven management techniques. Within the context of 'The Mentoring Process' this paper reviews some of the recent models and theories of mentoring used in Industry and Teacher Training. In an attempt to establish and identit' the best practice of current role models. Then considers the implications for its use in education specific to one high school in the state education sector, identif'ing the problems, concerns and benefits that the scheme created for those involved and associated with it. In an attempt to identif, which pupils would benefit from a mentoring approach the research has initiated a reporting system within the school. A specific outcome of that processes is the identification of pupils who are in subject teachers opinion not making the appropriate effort in their school work. This provides the target group to base the action research on. Clear guidelines to staff and pupils are provided in terms of mentoring. The anticipated outcome will hopefully lead to better motivated pupils in terms of effort and ultimately raise achievement within the school using a proven Industrial and\or Teacher Training mentoring model.
