A systems view of some aspects of management education and training in the UK

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The thesis outlines the e.nvironment of higher education in the U.K., from the Robbins Report of 1963 up to the proposals for change of 1978. This is followed by an examination of the wider system of Management Education and training in the U.K. This includes an examination of the University and Private sectors as well as the Further Education and non-University Higher Education sector which is the main focus of the thesis. Also in the context of the wider system, there is a consideration of the relationship between supply and demand; The extent to which needs are identified and satisfied. There is a more detailed analysis of the provision of management education and training in the further education and non-university higher education sector. This includes an examination of the range of courses and the relationships between the providers, clients and sponsors of education and training. In particular, there is a report of two surveys which were conducted with the objective of assessing the extent of organisational sponsorship onto management courses. The role of the Regional Management Centre is considered, and special attention is paid to the provision of courses in the North West region. The thesis arrives at a root definition for the system of management course provision and develops a conceptual model which is then compared with the existing provision. From this comparison, an alternative system design is proposed for the provision of management education and training in the Further Education and non-University education sector.
