The sedimentary record of seafloor uplift

Deep-marine environments are influenced by vertical seafloor movements, such as uplift and subsidence. The vertical deformation of the seafloor and subsurface influences sedimentary systems, hydrocarbon distribution, paleoclimate archives, and poses significant geohazard risks. This thesis investigates the different origins, evolution, and impacts of various uplifting mechanisms on deep-water sedimentary records based on the interpretation of geomorphological and geophysical data. Here, sedimentary and morphological proxies are linked to different uplift sources—including tectonics, magmatism, halokinesis, and fluid migration—to establish a framework for constraining the timing and dynamics of vertical deformation events across multiple spatial and temporal scales. To formulate and test the sedimentological and geomorphological uplift proxies, the research is structured around three distinct study areas, each representing a different scale and geological context. This thesis's findings emphasise how geomorphological and stratigraphic proxies are powerful tools for reconstructing uplift history. By correlating uplift mechanisms with distinct sedimentary responses across diverse tectonic and depositional regimes, this thesis presents a scalable and systematic approach to analyse seafloor and subsurface deformation. The results have broad implications for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, basin evolution models, and geohazard assessments in both modern and ancient marine settings.
